Brian Nilson, Fine Jewelry

Artist Statement

“About ten years ago I started making jewelry for my wife out of old silver spoons. Since then my desire to improve upon the work I do has led me to pursue nearly every facet of jewelry making. My favorites of these are gem cutting, engraving, open work, casting, and diamond setting. The continual effort to push my work to new heights has led to many interesting and challenging endeavors. With each piece I make my goal is to bring into this world something new and beautiful. Each piece I make teaches me something new about jewelry making, and also teaches me something new about myself.

I explored art in various forms as a child, always being encouraged by my mother to draw outside of the lines. As a child I attended drawing and painting classes with my father and brothers. At that time we used old wooden Bolla wine boxes for our art supplies, and as a result we became known as the Bolla boys. In high school I worked on my drawing skills, and in my last year I was introduced to the shop teacher. This teacher had a method of teaching that allowed for such creative freedom that I excelled in what I was taught. In his class room I learned how to work metal with a sense of “I can do anything”.

Biography

About a decade or so ago, Brian entered into the dental field and shortly after that began making jewelry for his wife. He learned how to cast metal and began making wedding bands for people he knew. Feeling the need to further his education, he immersed himself in the study of those that set new levels of excellence in their field. He took a course in engraving and openwork, and studied the work of Hanz Mevis and Gianmaria Buccellati. Brian strives to create jewelry that is unique, yet refined and solid in design. He believes that each piece of jewelry should tell its own story and become a part of the person who wears it.
