Alice Benvie Gebhart, Fused Glass

Artist Statement

“I grew up in a family where my artistic endeavors were supported. My father, Chris Benvie, was a prolific painter. People said I inherited my father’s talent but what I believe I inherited was that drive that he had for the creative process. I am inspired to look at the world around me with a keen eye towards the brilliance of color. Like the work of Matisse and Derain I use intense color and dynamic lines to translate reality. Kiln fired glass is the media that reveals this beauty to its utmost. I enjoy the technique of using glass to create something that is both abstract and literal.
It has been a lifelong ambition to merge the making of art and the teaching of art. My goal as an artist is to bring about a visual appreciation of our surroundings in my work. My goal as an artist and an educator is to foster an appreciation for the visual arts.

I was an oil painter since the age of 13 and stained glass artist since 1990. A workshop in 2004 inspired a self-taught exploration into kiln fired glass. This led to exhibitions and representation with galleries such as Brian Marki Fine Art in Oregon, Kittrell/Riffkind Art Glass in Texas and Chabot Gallery in Providence, Rhode Island.”
