Laura Pierce, Seaglass Jewelry
|
“Thoughts of the ocean are never far from my mind as I create my sea glass jewelry. The thrill of hunting for treasures tossed up by the tide inspires me. I have been searching for sea glass all my life. I am a largely self-taught artist and jeweler. At the beginning of their journey, sea glass shards were simply pieces of bottles that found their way into the ocean, were broken and smoothed by decades, perhaps centuries, of rolling in the surf. The more readily found colors are white, green, and amber. Rarer colors such as cobalt blue, lavender, and pink began as more exotic items, decorative glassware, poison bottles, flagons or decanters. The rarest colors of all are red and orange. Were these bottles tossed off a passing ship? Spilled from a ship wreck? That is the mystery of sea glass. One can only speculate on its history. What was once sharp and painful to the touch becomes a gleaming gem,
soft and soothing. Careful consideration is used to allow each piece to
have its own balance. Each piece has a voice and needs to be heard. To
that end I choose from my extensive collection of beads and wires to find
the right compliment for the piece of sea glass before me. I like to think
that my jewelry is an expression of the joy and excitement of being alive.
