Sharon Mooradian, Whimsical Decor

“What inspires me? Lots. I have learned to keep myself open to everything around me. Sometimes inspiration comes from colors I see in nature, a pattern in a fabric, my kaleidoscope or jewelry. Even the colors mixed in my paint tin, as I use it from project to project, reveal combinations of colors accidentally playing together. Crystal fringe, pearls, lamp finials, knobs and found objects are incorporated into my work. Sometimes one of those elements will be enough to inspire a design as I ask myself, 'How can I use this?'

A chair, table, box or frame starts with one design element and then takes off from there. A general plan is sketched out beforehand but rarely does the finished piece exactly match 'the plan'. While working, a different idea will come to me. Things start to change and I let them. I let go of the plan, let things develop as I go along. My hope is to create something that is beautiful, whimsical and functional. Something that makes me smile and hopefully other people too.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Since 1997 Sharon Mooradian has been designing and hand-painting unique furniture and accessories for the home. Unfinished chairs, tables, frames and boxes are transformed with paint and accented with a variety of found objects such as jewelry findings, knobs, lamp finials, crystals, cabochons and pearls. This unconventional use of disparate elements, along with her sense of play, yields a finished piece that is infused with beauty, whimsy and charm. Much attention to detail goes ito Sharon's work and the crafting is meticulous. There is a lot of overlay painting and tape blocking to achieve different effects. Genunine 22 KT gold leaf can be found on most of the trinket boxes. Designs run the gamut from fun and funky to classic and contemporary. There's something in her work for everyone. Most of her designs are one of a kind because she has more fun trying something new with each piece. She hopes the fun she has in creating the work carries through by bringing a smile to the person who views them.
