Nikki Sullivan, Mosaic

“I have always felt a love of all things artistic since I was a child. I just didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do. I fiddled around with photography for a while, (and still enjoy it) but it wasn’t a passion. I took an interest in interior design, but it never went past decorating my own home. Then, I inherited a beautiful mosaic coffee table my grandmother made in the early ‘60’s. I’ve seen that table in her apartment my whole life and have always admired it. I even added my own art to the underside of it in pencil as a little girl, (it’s still there!) but it wasn’t till it sat in my own living room that I decided I could make such beautiful things too. I love the color and textures of all the different materials that can be used in a mosaic. From smooth stained glass and tiles, to the rustic feel of stones and pebbles. And I’ve recently discovered how the beauty of beads and unwanted costume jewelry can add a lovely and unique touch to a mosaic. Enhancing the look of one’s home or garden with such creativity is a joy I never expected when I took this up. I don’t think I have a particular style, which is fine because I love to try different methods; kind of whatever floats my boat that particular day. Incorporating various found things from yard sales, flea markets and thrift shops is also a big part of mosaic. Hunting for these little treasures is exciting when I think of what I could do with them in my studio. There are many old, fun knick-knacks to tinker with that need new life breathed into them. The history of mosaic art is fascinating. The old works are amazing to
