Artist Statement:
“My initial curiosity and ultimate fondness and commitment to guardian angels began as a child. Slightly beyond sight and sound, angels were a group of spiritual beings whose partial purpose was to watch over and protect me. Here was a comforting and pure source of background care…like a delicate lace blanket of goodness and serenity.
The “Guardian Angels” original portraits explore my spiritual interpretation of the many winged creatures that protect and care for us. The spiritual significance is universal and non-denominational. In starting the background, I use a large flat brush loaded with 3 or 4 colors, not blended until applied to the canvas. This gives the background striations of loosely touching color. Every time I do this, I can see a subtle outline of where the angel’s face wants to be. I never know if eyes will be opened or closed; if mouths will be singing or silent. It is uncanny how that has been happening! I love to dress them in beautiful flowing robes, and enjoy giving them individual wings. The angels seem to direct me towards how they should be represented. I pray each portrait brings the viewer as much peace and serenity as I receive during their creation.”
