Artist Statement“The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera." - Dorothea Lange “There is design and order in the universe, in spite of and apart from human influence. Gravitational pull, the seasonal changes, cellular replication, animal behavior, biological homeostasis, oceanic tides, the miracle of human gestation, mathematical equations and constructs all reflect and point to a Designer. Amidst the complexity of it all, as we peel away the outer layers, there often emerges simplicity to what we see, think or feel. And the result can be surprisingly beautiful. Though we live in a world marred by man’s pain, sorrow, violence, injustice, greed, prejudice and hate, there is still much beauty; beauty in the common things, everyday things around us. My desire is to create the most evocative image possible; to portray common things, often, in an uncommon way, in order to capture some of the essence of the Designer and to transport the viewer, no matter how briefly, to a more tranquil and serene view of this world.” BiographyCarol attended Rhode Island School of Photography and was employed as a commercial photographer at a local advertising agency. During this time frame, she created photographic greeting cards, the first of their kind, and sold them in shops such as the Cliffs in Newport and local specialty shops. She also sold her work to interested parties. Over the next several years, Carol stayed in the advertising field, attended Rhode Island School of Design, and began to photograph on a more creative rather than strictly commercial level. It was about this time that Carol decided her photography was more art than ad and eventually left the commercial arena but continued to create images on a freelance basis. In 1986, Carol made a complete career change, attending Bridgewater State
College for her B.S. in Exercise Physiology. Vehicles in which to display
photographic images were still difficult to find. So, she decided to continue
photographing intermittently; freelancing, and capturing images on occasion. Back to Celebrations: |
