The expository essay is defined as describing reasons, explanations or the process of an informational writing. The main aim of the expository essay is to describe certain situations or processes. The expository essay is a multi-paragraph essay. It has a specific structure. The expository essay consists of an introduction, the body paragraphs and a conclusion.

To write an adequate essay it is necessary to follow the guidelines and other writing instructions. An expository essay should follow a logical sentence and have 3 different main points. Use transition words such as first, second, as a result, etc.

The thesis is defined as a statement that discusses the topic of the paper. The main ideas that support the thesis are explained in the body paragraph. The sentences in the body paragraph should be written with the use of direct quotations, specific textual details or strong explanations.

The expository writing is focused on one thesis. Such topics should explain the main plot with the supporting reasons. The conclusion further elaborates the reasons, transition words and other information.

The main purpose of an expository essay is to present other people’s views or to report about an event or situation.

What is an Expository Essay?

The expository essay ought to be well-organized and logical in its structure. There is an introductory part that should be informative, a body consisting of 4-5 paragraphs and a conclusion. The effect of an expository essay would have a greater impact if used quotations, definitions and facts. It is not recommended to use any first- or second-person pronouns (I, you, we, my, your, our, etc.). How to quickly set up the expository essay?

  • In paragraph one, place a thesis statement. Background information on your 3 topics.
  • In the second paragraph, but the main idea for paragraph 2 on the outline. Add your details, personal experience, descriptive details-describe experience, add facts and short anecdotes.
  • In the third paragraph, put your main idea on the outline, add details, experience and examples of the topic. In the fourth paragraph, explain the main idea onto the outline, details, personal examples of how the idea has been experienced in your life. Describe how the idea seems or what the person does. Add certain facts. There are several most commonly used transition words: To begin with, Also, Moreover, Therefore etc.  
  • The explanatory thesis should present facts to the readers, help them understand the main idea and explain which aim has been set to write an essay.
  • In each paragraph write the key idea for each paragraph and provide supporting sentences. Try to give an overview, brainstorm possible solutions and prove the necessity of your research.
  • The conclusion should restate and remind the audience what is the paper about.  The purpose of the concluding paragraph is to summarize the main ideas for the readers.
